Many patients ask me,

“Doctor, can I eat chicken if I have kidney disease?”

The answer is yes—but choose the right part and the right portion.

Chicken is an excellent source of high-quality protein, but not all parts are the same.

Which chicken is best?

Best Choice

Skinless chicken breast

Best Choice

This is the leanest part of the chicken. It contains less fat and is generally the preferred choice for people with chronic kidney disease.

  • Good Choices

Good Choices

Skinless chicken thigh and skinless drumstick

  • These are also good sources of protein. They contain a little more fat than chicken breast but can still be enjoyed in moderate portions as part of a balanced kidney-friendly diet.

Limit or Avoid

Limit or Avoid

  • Chicken skin
  • Fried chicken
  • Chicken wings with skin
  • Processed chicken such as nuggets, sausages, and salami
  • These are usually higher in fat, salt, and phosphorus, making them less suitable for many kidney patients.

Remember…

It’s not just what you eat—it’s how much and how it’s cooked.

The key message

Choose grilled, boiled, steamed, or baked chicken instead of deep-fried preparations.

And most importantly…

Your protein needs depend on your stage of kidney disease.

Someone with early CKD, advanced CKD, or on dialysis may need different amounts of protein.

Choose lean cuts. Remove the skin. Eat the right portion. That’s the healthiest way to enjoy chicken while protecting your kidneys
