Many people ask me,

“Doctor, which foods are good for my kidneys?”

The truth is, there isn’t one magical food that protects your kidneys. It’s your overall eating pattern that matters.

Here are some of the best foods to include regularly if your kidneys are currently healthy.

Vegetables

Spinach

Foods to include

Cabbage

  • Cauliflower
  • Broccoli
  • Carrots
  • Cucumber
  • Beans
  • Pumpkin
  • Bottle gourd
  • Ridge gourd
  • Fruits
  • Apple
  • Guava
  • Papaya
  • Orange
  • Berries
  • Pear
  • Pineapple
  • Watermelon (in moderation)
  • Whole grains
  • Brown rice
  • Millets
  • Oats
  • Whole wheat

Healthy proteins

Fruits

Fish

  • Skinless chicken
  • Eggs
  • Lentils and dals
  • Chickpeas
  • Kidney beans (rajma) in moderation
  • Soy products like tofu
  • Healthy fats
  • Nuts like almonds and walnuts (a small handful)

Whole grains

Seeds like flaxseed and chia seeds

  • Olive oil or groundnut oil in moderation
  • Now, what should you reduce?
  • Too much salt, sugary drinks, sweets, processed foods, instant noodles, packaged snacks, processed meats, and excessive fast food.
  • And remember…
  • If you already have chronic kidney disease, these recommendations may change. Some fruits, vegetables, and nuts can be high in potassium or phosphorus, and your diet should be individualized by your nephrologist or renal dietitian.

Healthy proteins

Healthy kidneys don’t need a special “kidney diet.” They need a heart-healthy diet.

  • Eat fresh. Eat colorful. Eat less salt. Stay active. That’s one of the best ways to protect your kidneys for life
